MUSIC MENTORS

Malcolm Campbell

Malcolm CampbellPrior to SPIN, Malcolm was Group Publisher of Vice Media, and prior to that, Launch Publisher of Blender magazine, which won various awards, including Ad Week’s “Launch of the Year” and “The Best Magazine In America” by the Chicago Sun Times.

Before Dennis Publishing, Malcolm was part of SPIN from 1990 to 2000, rising from Midwest Sales Representative to Publisher during that time. He helped oversee the sale and transition of SPIN from the ownership team of Stephen Swid and Bob Guccione, Jr. to Miller Publishing.

Malcolm started his career in advertising as an Account Executive at Foote, Cone & Belding in Chicago.

Ben Sollee

Ben Sollee wants you to experience all the beauty and banality that life has to offer. It’s a serious request, and his enthusiasm is genuine. Armed with a cello, Sollee is canvassing the country, sometimes by bicycle, imploring folks to rediscover the connections between music, art, film, dance, their community, and personal relationships.

These factors ultimately translate to the mindset and making of the classically trained pop cellist’s new project – Inclusions. Beyond bridging genres and demographics with earnest, dynamic songwriting and passionate performances, Ben Sollee seeks to intertwine his music with art and life. The theme of Inclusions is large, humanistic and universal – how relationships influence us all whether intentional or not.

Ben Sollee first emerged with his 2008-debut Learning to Bend. Saturated with sweeping moods and visceral maturity, Learning to Bend showcased a wild mixture of musical approaches that Ben describes as “classically influenced folk with leanings of R&B and soul.” The album caught the ear of NPR’s Morning Edition, which heralded Sollee as one of the “Top Ten Great Unknown Artists of 2007.”

Collaboration plays an integral influence in Ben’s career.  He has toured throughout the world with banjo player and songstress Abigail Washburn, multi-Grammy banjoist Bela Fleck and fiddler Casey Driessen as part of the Sparrow Quartet. In 2010, Ben collaborated with fellow Kentuckians Daniel Martin Moore and My Morning Jacket front-man Yim Yames on the Sub Pop released Dear Companion. The album led to an eight-date tour to raise awareness about the destruction caused by mountain top removal coal mining in central Appalachia.

Additionally, Ben works Kentuckians for the Commonwealth to help preserve a cornerstone and major influence of his songwriting – his ancestral Appalachia.

Keep a look out for Ben in late 2011 when he embarks on another “Ditch The Van Tour” when Ben and his band abandon the comforts of driving or flying and instead peddle their gear and instruments (yep, the cello too) across the country on bicycles. Ben’s mission is to engage a greater sense of community involvement at every performance. By huffing it on two-wheels between cities, Ben and his crew are able to discover people and facets of our country in ways that traditional touring could not allow. “It’s not about being green or even sustainable… we want to exploit the limitations of the bicycle to slow down and experience the rich communities and people that I’ve spent years flying-by and driving past.”

MUSIC GROUNDBREAKERS

Marley Carroll
Marley Carroll is a prodigious multi-instrumentalist, producer and DJ from Asheville, North Carolina. The beginnings of his musicianship sprang from training in piano, percussion and scratch DJ technique. His debut album, Melanaster is the result of meticulous bedroom alchemy, sounding like a lost Radiohead LP submerged in ten feet of salt water. Marley created Melanaster entirely on his own. The album’s touchstones are found in the space between the beautiful haze of early Nineties shoegaze rock (My Bloody Valentine) and early 2000’s IDM (Autechre, Squarepusher). The result is smeared, Marley Carrolmelancholy pop songs tethered to abstract electronic rhythms, what NPR called “gorgeously subdued glitch-pop”. Marley’s work has been featured on All Songs Considered, the TCIAF re:sound podcast, and the award-winning documentary, Pelada. The track “Flying Nomura Theme” was given a place on volume four of the respected What.CD compilation, and was voted the #1 track of the collection.

Up until recently, the songs from Melanaster and new originals have been rearranged and performed by live bands. Now, Marley has developed his first solo PA set to bring a more raw and boundary-pushing version of his music to live audiences. Combining vocals, keyboard, turntable, X1 MIDI controller, Serato, and a custom Logic interface, Marley transforms into something of a one man symphony. Quietly and humbly, Marley’s performance illustrates the irony of a painfully beautiful life. Like the ocean, his show is universal and inclusive yet does not let us forget that we are small and alone. To witness the live performance is undeniably the human experience.

As a DJ, Marley Carroll fluently blends together a curated selection of IDM, minimal house, indie rock, hip hop and a few pop staples. His sets include masterful mixing, innovative glitch technique and the skillful scratching that earned him high praise and accolades from a young age. He has a sixth-sense ability in reading his crowd’s reaction to steer his sets in all the right directions. Making all selections pertinent to his audience, no matter what their tastes, it is not uncommon for people to walk away with a newly discovered appreciation for genres they never understood or cared for. Never before has a DJ so creatively mixed seemingly uncooperative styles of music into one cohesive masterpiece. At age 17, Marley won the title of best scratch DJ in North Carolina by winning the Guitar Center’s Spin Off competition. He has shared the stage with such great artists as RJD2, Prefuse 73, Blackalicious, Martyn, Emancipator, Eskmo, Tokimonsta, Eprom, Lipp Service and more and was recently voted one of the top local DJs by his fellow Western North Carolina citizens.

GALEN KIPAR
Galen Kipar is a touring composer, guitarist, singer based in Asheville, NC. He is a graduate of Brevard College where he studied music with an emphasis in composition. He fronts the Galen Kipar
Project , a touring quintet with four albums in five years under their belt.  The most recent, the Scenic Route, was voted #51 in WNCW top 100 of 2010 and featured on WNCW’s Crowd Around the Mic compilation. The music has garnered reviews such as,  “complex yet accessible” and “cohesive and poignant” with “experimental folk masterpieces.” ”He is dedicated to creating an honest, original sound that brings peace of mind, and to exploring creative process, tone, orchestration, and the development of music theory in general.” “The process of writing a song can be like making breakfast for 15. It’s like Tetris, it’s like tug of war between left brain and right brain. You poke, jab, shift, rotate, retrograde, sequence, invert, slur, augment, smooth over, compromise, come to terms with … until you can’t anymore. Then, you take a break and do it again.” www.galenkipar.com www.facebook.com/galenkipar
